an alternative to Talkiatry, and what Talkiatry actually covers

last updated october 23, 2026

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice that hires its own clinicians and is built around insurance. insurance matters more than anything else on this page. its insurance page, read on 2026-10-23, now says it offers a self-pay option "for patients whose insurance we do not accept for both psychiatry and therapy appointments," but not to people on government plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. on Medicaid itself, its own pages disagree: the insurance FAQ says "We don't take Medicaid at this time," while a separate Medicaid page says "We're in-network with Medicaid plans" and lists no plans. if you have Medicaid, ask Talkiatry and your plan before you book. veisund does not offer psychiatry, medication, or therapy. it is free peer support by post and reply, under a handle. we describe Talkiatry's service here; we never compare medications or suggest one.

this page is part of veisund (formerly Resolv Social), a free, anonymous peer-support community with a sourced library on psychiatric medications.

where these facts come from

checked on 2026-09-29 against Talkiatry's homepage and its help center articles on insurance, Medicare and Medicaid, controlled substances, therapy, age, and cancellations. each is Talkiatry's own wording, paraphrased only for length. insurance, self-pay and Medicaid were rechecked on 2026-10-23 against its insurance page and its Medicaid page.

when Talkiatry is the better choice

if you have commercial insurance or Medicare that Talkiatry accepts and you want a psychiatric evaluation or ongoing medication management, Talkiatry is built for exactly that and veisund offers none of it. visits are online, it sees patients from age 5, and it says visits are longer than many practices so there is time to talk. it also says it is a practice rather than a marketplace: it vets and hires its own clinicians. if you think you might need medication, a psychiatrist is the person to ask.

the four limits to check before you sign up

first, insurance: self-pay is now offered if Talkiatry does not take your plan, but not to anyone on Medicaid or Medicare, and its own pages disagree on whether it takes Medicaid at all. if Talkiatry says it does not take your plan, its own help center points you to your doctor, your insurer's directory, Zocdoc or Psychology Today. second, fit: Talkiatry says it cannot tell whether you are a fit for virtual care until after the first visit. third, controlled substances: it says whether its doctors can prescribe them depends on your state's laws, because some states require an in-person visit first, and that a new clinician may not agree with a past treatment plan. fourth, therapy: it offers therapy only to people already seeing a Talkiatry psychiatrist. it also does not treat primary substance use disorders. and a privacy note: Talkiatry's homepage carries a notice that a vendor security incident affected some patients' protected health information; the linked notice names the vendor as TriZetto Provider Solutions.

what veisund does differently

veisund is a free app (iOS and Android) where you post what you are dealing with under a handle you choose, and other members can answer. it is not live chat, nobody is waiting on the other end, and the community is still small, so a reply can take a while. when a reply helps, you can mark your post resolved and credit that reply. the web side is an evidence library: plain-language summaries of studies, each with its source and an evidence grade, and a lookup of drug-company payments to your own doctor from the federal Open Payments data. no one on veisund is a licensed clinician treating you, nothing is billed to insurance, and nothing is prescribed. one overlap worth mentioning: Talkiatry's own footer points patients to the federal Open Payments database, and veisund's library has a lookup built on that same data, so you can see drug-company payments to any doctor, not only a Talkiatry one. veisund will not tell you anything about which medication to take.

common questions

Can I use Talkiatry without insurance?

Yes, in most cases. Its insurance page, read on 2026-10-23, says: "We now offer a self-pay option for patients whose insurance we do not accept for both psychiatry and therapy appointments." Your payment method is typically charged 24 to 48 hours after the visit. Self-pay is not available to patients on government plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. The page does not list a self-pay price.

Does Talkiatry take Medicaid?

Its own pages disagree. Talkiatry's insurance page, read on 2026-10-12 and again on 2026-10-23, says: "We don't take Medicaid at this time." A separate Talkiatry page about Medicaid, read on 2026-10-23, says "We're in-network with Medicaid plans" and lists no plans. Before you book, ask Talkiatry and your Medicaid plan directly. The insurance page says self-pay is not available for patients covered by government insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare, and lists Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna and UnitedHealthcare among the insurers it accepts. Its help center (checked 2026-09-29) says it accepts Original Medicare (Part B) and select Medicare Advantage plans. If you have Medicaid, the free therapy guide lists the routes that do take it, starting with federally funded health centers.

How much does Talkiatry cost?

Talkiatry says most patients pay around $30 out of pocket per visit with insurance. Your cost depends on your plan and deductible. Cancelling or rescheduling with less than 48 hours' notice costs $100, which insurance does not cover.

Does Talkiatry offer therapy?

Only for patients already working with a Talkiatry psychiatrist, who can refer you to a staff therapist. It is not a standalone therapy service.

Can Talkiatry prescribe controlled substances?

Talkiatry says it depends on your state's laws, since some states require an in-person visit first, and on the clinician's own evaluation. Questions about a specific medication belong with your prescriber.

Is there a free alternative to Talkiatry?

There is no free equivalent for psychiatry. veisund is free peer support, not medical care. Without insurance, community mental health centers and federally qualified health centers often offer care on a sliding scale. In a crisis, call or text 988.
